The One Thing We Didn’t Check Before Moving — And Regretted

Most people check the school district first when choosing where to live with kids. We did the same.

But there’s one thing we didn’t think about at all — and I really wish we had.

The distance to a children’s hospital.

I used to think, “My kids are healthy. We probably won’t need it.” It didn’t feel like something urgent or important at the time.

Then one day, everything changed.

My daughter fell while roller skating. Her elbow was swollen, and we knew something wasn’t right. We took her to a nearby urgent care, thinking they would help.

But they couldn’t do much. They could only take an X-ray.

Anything beyond that? We had to go through a pediatrician. And even then, they couldn’t really treat it either — we were told we needed to go to a children’s hospital.

The problem was, the nearest children’s hospital was 2–3 hours away.

And with traffic, that meant a 7–10 hour round trip.

With an injured child.

That day made us realize something we had completely overlooked.

When you have kids, emergencies don’t feel like “rare situations” anymore. They feel very real, very fast.

And in those moments, distance matters more than anything.

That experience became one of the main reasons we decided to relocate again.

If I could go back, this is something I would absolutely check before choosing a house:

  • Is there a children’s hospital within 1 hour?
  • How bad is traffic during peak times?
  • What happens if we need to go there quickly?

School district is important. But access to medical care is just as important — maybe even more in certain moments.

It’s not something you think about… until you have to.

And by then, it’s too late.

If you’re moving with kids, don’t skip this step.
